Desi Mms:- Dibakar Banerjee, the visionary behind India’s inaugural digital Desi Mms leak, “Love, Sex aur Dhokha”, shared that the concept of exploring “wanker” was ignited by the infamous DPS MMS scandal.
“The inspiration came when the infamous MMS scandal broke in Delhi, triggering a chain of similar events. During this time I wrote two short narratives, which later evolved into the trilogy of ‘Love Sex aur Dhokha’. That’s where it all started,” Dibakar revealed during an interview.
However, the director clarified that his cinematic creation goes beyond the specific incident, highlighting the pervasive influence of cameras in our daily lives. “Desi MMS is not just about the MMS scandal but also sheds light on the events that preceded it. It covers our authentic lives as well as love in the realm of Bollywood. It examines how the media interprets investigations involving hidden cameras,” he said.

The 2004 incident, which centered on two schoolchildren, attracted widespread attention across the country. It left such a deep impact that Anurag Kashyap decided to take inspiration from it for one of the important characters in his cult classic ‘Dev D’.

However, Dibakar stressed that his Desi Mms is quite different from Anurag Kashyap’s portrayal in ‘Dev D’. He clarified, “My Desi Mms video is completely different in terms of both narrative and execution. Anurag is a friend, and I had the opportunity to review early versions of his video; we discussed about it.”
Dibakar, who has previously delved into subjects such as the rise of the land mafia and a young man’s transformation into a thief in videos like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ and ‘Oye Lucky Oye’, is confident that his latest creation will surprise Indian audiences with its “daring” content.
“This video takes an unapologetic and daring approach. I hope the reactions will be clearly divided. It is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of experience. This is one video where we will not make any empty promises to the audience,” Dibakar asserts.
The director, who is simultaneously helming a political thriller with his ‘Oye Lucky Oye’ collaborator Abhay Deol, expressed that he had a long-standing desire to make an MMS video focusing on digital camera technology. In ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ he found a perfect subject to explore the possibilities of this medium.
“This Desi MMS could never have been captured on 35mm, even if one wanted to. The three stories were lensed using three different digital cameras, which are now inseparable from our daily lives. We are under constant surveillance, watched from all angles. It delves deeply into the omnipresence of digital eyes,” Dibakar explains about Desi MMS, which is produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms.
Intending to release Desi MMS Unveiled in the first quarter of 2010, the director explained that sexuality plays an important role in the story, but Desi Leak addresses broader, more profound themes.
He explained, “The story revolves around love, sex and betrayal – three important aspects of human existence and society. However, it presents reality and truth in their pure form, avoiding any attempt to romanticize, eroticize or titillate.”
Despite the “explicit” content featured in Desi MMS, the director does not expect any complications with the censor board.
